Manoj Punjabi
No one expected that a man once looked down upon and fired just three months into his first job would rise to become the king of Indonesian cinema and the leader of MD Entertainment—a content giant from Indonesia now reaching the world stage.
MD Entertainment: Indonesia’s Content Giant Goes Global
The name MD Entertainment is inseparable from the evolution of Indonesia’s entertainment industry over the past two decades. Behind dozens of popular soap operas, box office films, and internationally renowned content stands visionary producer Manoj Punjabi, now hailed as one of the most influential figures in Southeast Asia’s creative industry.
Founded in 2003, MD Entertainment steadily built its own content ecosystem. Through multi-genre storytelling and technological adaptation, MD has transformed into “The Biggest Content Powerhouse in Southeast Asia.”
From Soap Operas to Stardom
MD’s journey began on television. In 2005, the soap opera Bawang Merah Bawang Putih produced by MD won Favorite Drama Series at the Panasonic Awards, marking Manoj Punjabi’s early success in TV.
This success continued with Cinta Fitri and Melati untuk Marvel, which dominated prime time slots and earned accolades like SCTV Awards and Yahoo OMG Awards. These series built a massive, loyal fanbase.
Box Office Domination
Unsatisfied with television alone, Manoj took MD to the big screen. Ayat-Ayat Cinta (2008) and Habibie & Ainun (2012) each drew more than 4.7 million viewers, cementing MD’s status as a top commercial film studio.
Subsequent films like Rudy Habibie, Surga yang Tak Dirindukan, and KKN di Desa Penari continued to break records. KKN, in particular, became the highest-grossing Indonesian film of all time, proving Manoj’s winning formula: high production value meets relatable storytelling.
In 2025, the feature film Ipar Adalah Maut not only entered the top 10 highest-grossing Indonesian films of all time but also surpassed the legendary Laskar Pelangi, which held its national record for years. From viral story to cinematic phenomenon—this film proved the power of local narratives when led by a bold vision.
Reviving Local Horror
One of MD’s greatest contributions was reviving the local horror genre. Through the Danur Universe—starting with Danur: I Can See Ghosts—MD rekindled the horror flame in Indonesian cinemas.
In 2024, MD Pictures made history with Badarawuhi di Desa Penari, the first Southeast Asian film produced exclusively for IMAX, joining a global elite list alongside Dune: Part 2 and Joker: Folie à Deux. This film also marked a collaboration with Hollywood studio Lionsgate for international distribution, including the U.S. market.
TV & Digital Expansion
In 2025, MD made a strategic move by acquiring TV station NET., rebranding it as MDTV. Despite an initial market share of just 1.4%, Manoj called the acquisition a “game-changer” to provide wider public access to high-quality content.
In the digital space, MD aggressively partnered with global OTT platforms like Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, WeTV, and iflix. These collaborations brought original Indonesian series to global audiences—Layangan Putus and My Lecturer My Husband successfully trended in more than 25 countries, including the U.S., Japan, Turkey, and the Netherlands.
High Valuation & Global Recognition
MD’s IPO in 2018 marked its transition from local entertainment company to global corporate entity. Its initial valuation hit USD 19 million, with Tencent becoming a major foreign shareholder at 14.6%.
Forbes listed Manoj Punjabi among the 50 richest people in Indonesia, with a fortune exceeding USD 1 billion—making him the first film producer to ever join the list.
Local Stories, Global Echo
The success of series like Layangan Putus, which went viral and trended globally, along with the film Ipar Adalah Maut, now in the all-time top 10 Indonesian films and surpassing Laskar Pelangi, reinforces one truth: local stories can go global when crafted with high production standards.
“I want Indonesian stories to stand on the world stage—not as alternative content, but as mainstream entertainment,” Manoj Punjabi stated during a press conference (March 2024).
Recognition & the Road Ahead
MD Entertainment recently received the Media & Entertainment Award at the 2025 Bisnis Indonesia Awards, further strengthening its reputation as a dominant force in the national creative industry.
With experience, global capital access, and an uncompromising commitment to quality, MD Entertainment is no longer just a content producer—it’s a cultural force bringing Indonesian stories to the world.
And the story isn’t over yet.
