The name MD Entertainment is inseparable from the development of Indonesia’s entertainment industry over the past two decades. Behind dozens of popular soap operas, box office films, and internationally acclaimed content stands visionary producer Manoj Punjabi, now recognized as one of the most influential figures in Southeast Asia’s creative industry.
Founded in 2003, MD Entertainment has steadily built its own content ecosystem. Through a cross-genre approach and technological adaptation, MD has transformed into “The Biggest Content Powerhouse in Southeast Asia.”
Starting from Television Dramas
MD began its journey on the small screen. In 2005, MD’s soap opera Bawang Merah Bawang Putih won the “Favorite Drama Series” award at the Panasonic Awards, marking the beginning of Manoj Punjabi’s success in the television realm.
This success continued with soap operas like Cinta Fitri and Melati untuk Marvel, which dominated prime time slots and garnered numerous awards such as the SCTV Awards and Yahoo OMG Awards. The popularity of these series built a massive and loyal fan base.
Dominating Indonesia’s Box Office
Not content with just television, Manoj brought MD to the silver screen. Ayat-Ayat Cinta (2008) and Habibie & Ainun (2012) each drew over 4.7 million viewers, cementing MD’s position as a top commercial film production house.
Subsequent films like Rudy Habibie, Surga yang Tak Dirindukan, and KKN di Desa Penari continued breaking records. KKN, in particular, became the highest-grossing Indonesian film of all time, proving Manoj’s formula: combining high production values with emotionally resonant storytelling.
Reviving Local Horror
One of MD’s greatest contributions to the industry is the revival of local horror. Through the Danur Universe—which began with Danur: I Can See Ghosts—MD reopened the horror genre for Indonesian cinemas, which had seen a period of decline.
In 2024, MD Pictures made history with Badarawuhi di Desa Penari, Southeast Asia’s first film produced specifically for IMAX, joining the elite ranks of global releases like Dune: Part 2 and Joker: Folie à Deux. This film also marked a collaboration with Hollywood studio Lionsgate for international distribution, including in the U.S.
Expansion into TV & Digital
In 2025, MD made a strategic move by acquiring the television network NET. TV and rebranding it as MDTV. Although it initially held only a 1.4% market share, Manoj described the acquisition as a “game-changer” in democratizing access to quality content.
In the digital space, MD aggressively partnered with global OTT platforms like Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, WeTV, and iflix. These collaborations brought original Indonesian series to the global stage—Layangan Putus and My Lecturer My Husband both trended in over 15 countries, including the U.S., Japan, Turkey, and the Netherlands.
High Valuation & Global Recognition
MD’s IPO in 2018 marked the transformation of a local entertainment company into a global corporate entity. Its initial valuation reached USD 19 million, with Tencent becoming the largest foreign shareholder at 14.6%.
Forbes named Manoj Punjabi among the 50 richest individuals in Indonesia, with a net worth exceeding USD 1 billion, making him the first film producer to enter the list.
Local Stories with Global Echoes
The success of series like Layangan Putus—which went viral and trended globally—and films like Ipar Adalah Maut, which ranked among the top 10 highest-grossing Indonesian films of all time, proves that local stories can break through international markets when produced with world-class standards.
“I want Indonesian stories to stand on the world stage—not just as alternative entertainment, but as a main attraction,” said Manoj Punjabi in a March 2024 press conference.
Recognition and the Road Ahead
MD Entertainment recently won the Media & Entertainment award at the 2025 Bisnis Indonesia Awards, further solidifying its image as a dominant force in the national creative industry.
With experience, global capital access, and a deep commitment to quality, MD Entertainment is no longer just a content producer—it is a cultural force, bringing Indonesian stories to the global spotlight.
